Orphanage in Zanzibar
Tanzania Overview
Tanzania, one of the best countries to visit in East Africa. The island is a paradisiacal place where tropical nature and the affection of its people predominate. Zanzibar is a unique destination in the world, you can discover its inhabitants and customs depending on where you are. If you fancy a calmer and more familiar atmosphere, you can visit the southwestern area of the island, if you like surfing and a good atmosphere, head into the eastern area, and if you want to see white sand beaches, head north.
The best time to discover, visit and delve into the Tanzanian experience is the weekend. Enjoy various plans such as hiking through the Jozani Forest, taste the flavors of the island at the Spice Farm or enjoy the sandbanks at the Safari Blue.
Volunteering at Montessori Orphanage
Orphanages in Tanzania are places where children come from difficult situations with great difficulties. They come from the streets, abandoned or their family has great financial problems to be able to support them.
In Zanzibar, the majority of the population is Muslim so you must respect their culture in every way. We will inform you about some topics that are important to you, but don’t worry, Tanzanians are very open, pleasant and very welcoming people.
Montessori has managed to create a great family where children receive classes, attention and affection. It is difficult to say how many children there are at any given time, but there are many who need help in different aspects since each one comes from a different situation and is of different ages.
The volunteer’s task is to collaborate in whatever he or she can, depending on the needs of the orphanage at the time the volunteer arrives. The basic tasks range from giving them love, playing with them, painting to teaching classes or helping in the kitchen.
Each volunteer can propose a project and carry it out to the extent possible!
At the beginning of the project you will be able to see what you think you can help with and make your stay as enriching as possible. English is not essential, although it is very useful since children in primary school study in Swahili, but secondary school in English so it is important that if you dedicate yourself to teaching English you have a good level, otherwise you can always play, help or do hundreds of things with them.
School holidays are in April, August and December so these are the periods when there are the most children in the orphanage. The rest of the year you can help since some live in the orphanage and others arrive later.
